1. Tools and Materials Required
Crimping Tools
iCrimp HD-2612: Designed for Deutsch DT series solid contacts (AWG 26–12), compatible with DT, DTM, and DTP connectors.
iCrimp IWC-1424AN: For stamped contacts, ensuring precise crimping.
Additional Tools: Wire strippers (for removing insulation), wire cutters (for trimming length), and Deutsch DT-RT1 removal tool (for disassembly).
Connectors and Contacts
Select DT series connectors (open/stamped barrel or solid/closed barrel) based on application.
Match contact type (solid or stamped) with the crimping tool.
Ensure wire gauge matches the cavity marking on the connector (e.g., letter/number codes).
2. Crimping Process
Step 1: Prepare the Wire
Strip Insulation: Use wire strippers to remove insulation from the wire end. Length should match the contact’s requirement (typically contact length + 1–2 mm).
Trim Wire: Cut the wire to the desired length.
Step 2: Crimp the Contact
Insert Wire: Slide the stripped wire into the metal sleeve of the contact (pin or socket). Ensure full insertion with no exposed strands.
Position Crimping Tool: Place the contact in the correct jaw of the tool (HD-2612 for solid, IWC-1424AN for stamped). Align properly.
Apply Pressure: Squeeze the tool evenly until it completes its stroke (some tools have a ratchet mechanism requiring multiple squeezes until release). The crimped contact should tightly grip the wire without looseness or deformation.
Step 3: Quality Checks
Visual Inspection: The crimp should be smooth, crack-free, and securely bonded to the wire.
Pull Test: Gently tug the wire to confirm the contact is firmly attached (no sliding or detachment).
Electrical Test: Use a multimeter to verify low resistance (close to the wire’s native resistance).
3. Connector Assembly
Step 1: Insert Contacts
Push the crimped contact into the connector’s cavity from the rear until it clicks into place (audible or slight resistance indicates locking).
Use a Deutsch insertion tool for alignment if needed to avoid tilting or damage.
Step 2: Install Wedgelock
Press the wedgelock into the connector using needle-nose pliers until fully locked (click sound).
Ensure correct orientation (e.g., DT series 2-way sockets require flat sides aligned internally; 3-way sockets have arrows pointing outward to the lock mechanism).
4. Key Considerations
Tool Compatibility
Environmental Durability
Deutsch connectors are used in harsh environments (automotive, industrial). Ensure seals (if applicable) are intact after assembly.
Avoid exposing unassembled contacts to moisture or corrosion.
Best Practices
Keep the tool perpendicular to the contact during crimping to prevent uneven pressure.
For disassembly, use the DT-RT1 tool to release the locking spring—never yank the wire forcefully.
